Who I am and what I study
I'm Sam Desmond Schulman, a PhD student in Integrative Biology at LSU New Orleans, where I work in the Shi Lab. I study how the nematode C. elegans balances metabolism, stress survival and healthspan during sudden heat and cold stress, with a focus on the glyoxylate-shunt gene icl-1 and the sugar trehalose. My training is supported by an AGE VOYAGER award from the American Aging Association.
I came to science after years in construction and food service, and I mentor undergraduate and first-generation students. I'll use this blog for short notes on aging and stress biology, lab methods, and the tools I use. Longer pieces go on my Substack at samdesmondschulman.substack.com.
